Curated Business Resources — FAQs

A curated shortlist of business growth resources: workshops, reading, AI tools and live business examples recommended for owner-operators. One list, kept short deliberately, updated when something better appears.

Owner-operators and small teams: trades, local services, retail, e-commerce and professional services. Enterprise strategy material is deliberately excluded.

Because attention is the scarcest resource an owner has. Six strong recommendations that get used beat sixty bookmarks that never do. The bar for inclusion is would I recommend this to a friend with a real business.

A hands-on workshop, because it forces implementation, which is the ingredient stuck businesses are missing. Reading and tools compound afterwards.

A website chatbot for lead capture. It is cheap, live within days and measurable within weeks, which builds the confidence to automate bigger workflows afterwards.

Published case studies describe the past; live sites show current pricing, offers and copy decisions as they change. Watching a real operation adjust over months teaches judgement no book can.

No. The list is curated on merit, and resources that stop earning their place get removed.

It is reviewed periodically, and the updated date in the page header reflects the last pass. The list changes rarely, by design.

One test: do attendees leave with work completed, not just notes. Workshops built around implementing during the session clear that bar; inspiration-only events rarely change a business.

One book, one applied idea, one deadline inside 30 days. Then the next book. Owners who apply one idea per month outrun those who read weekly and change nothing.

Genuinely useful resources for owner-operators are welcome via the contact options on the network sites. The inclusion bar stays high.

This site's job is the curated list. For hands-on help, start with the workshop and speaking options ranked above, which is where the practical work happens.

The Shortlist Method: Why Six Resources Beat Six Hundred Bookmarks

Updated August 2026  ·  4 min read

Every business owner has the folder: hundreds of saved articles, courses bought on sale, newsletters unread since March. The collection grows while the business stays the same, because collecting feels like progress and costs nothing.

The shortlist method is the antidote, and it is how this site is run. Here is the method, so you can apply it to your own inputs.

Cap the list, force the ranking

A capped list of six changes your relationship with new material. Every candidate resource must displace something already on the list, which forces the question that matters: is this actually better than what I have. Most new material fails that test, and the failing is the feature. Your attention stays on the few resources that survive.

Weight implementation over information

Rank resources by how much work they cause you to complete, not how much they teach. A workshop that ends with your pricing rebuilt outranks a brilliant book you merely enjoyed. An AI tool answering real customer enquiries outranks a course about AI. The rankings above follow exactly that weighting, which is why hands-on options sit at the top.

Keep one live example in the mix

Books and courses age; live businesses do not. Keeping at least one working operation on your shortlist, and actually watching how its offers and pricing evolve, grounds everything else you consume. It is the difference between studying navigation and watching someone sail.

Review quarterly, ruthlessly

Each quarter, ask of every resource: did this change a decision in the last 90 days. Anything that did not gets replaced or removed, no sentimentality. A shortlist maintained this way stays sharp for years while the bookmark folder of the average owner becomes an archive of good intentions.

Six resources, implementation-weighted, one live example, quarterly review. Steal the method even if you ignore the list, though the list above is a strong place to start.
